NUFFI Executive Director Virginia Kasinki highlighted the construction of a new 24 by 72-foot high tunnel structure on the Urban Farm property, intended to enable year-round food production for city residents. Emphasizing the city's reliance on food pantries, Kasinki mentioned NUFFI's past donations of 30,000 pounds of food during the summers. Through collaboration with the City of Newburgh, NUFFI secured HUD CARES ACT grants and a USDA Urban Agriculture Productivity Program grant for outreach efforts. This includes training individuals to assess food needs and insecurities in various city locations and collaborating with beginner growers through webinars and hands-on education at the Urban Farm. Additionally, Kasinki and Chairwoman Ramona Burton discussed plans to expand the farm, enhance infrastructure, and continue agricultural programming in the upcoming year.
