Hidden on Carpenter and Gidney avenues in Newburgh, the Downing Park Urban Farm, managed by the Newburgh Urban Farm and Food Initiative (NUFFI), is a two-acre oasis combating the city's food insecurity. NUFFI, leasing the land since 2015, has donated or sold 9,000 pounds of fresh produce this year, supporting community gardens and providing agricultural education. Director Virginia Kasinki emphasizes the health impact of limited fresh food access. Amid the pandemic, the farm donated 10,000 pounds of produce in 2020. With plans for a high-tunnel greenhouse, NUFFI aims to expand production. Collaborating with Our Core Inc., they respond to diverse community needs, including requests for fresh callaloo. Reverend J Edward Lewis envisions using a rebuilt church kitchen for a community mission.
